Ken
|
"I'm old." Ken is 61. In May of 2003 he had a heart attack. Since then he has been unable to work. His social security doesn't kick in until he's 62. Since having the heart attack, until next year, he's on the streets. He also has a hernia and gets kidney stones. He gets no money from the state at all. None. He works Sundays selling newspapers, "It's gives me cigarette money." He tries to get work but no one will hire him because of his health problems. The last member of his family died in 2000. These words don't sum up this quiet, polite man. He smiled happily for the photo while eating the food we brought. He spoke to me, openly, pleasantly, thanked me for bringing him food and talking to him. When I first asked him to tell me something about him, he said, "I'm old." The streets will help him with that. |
