How likely is it that birds cracked the glass on my bird feeder?

A few weeks ago, I put up a hopper-style bird feeder with several panes of glass. I noticed yesterday that one of the panes has a small partial hole/indentation where something impacted it, then a two-inch crack emanating from that point. Could it be from a bird's beak? Would a bird peck at the glass?

I agree with Gabriel. Sounds like a BB to me. Is it on the same side of the bird feeder as the [suspect] neighbors' house?

The only common bird which might be able to break it would be a woodpecker. However, I don't think they would peck on something like a bird feeder. They peck wood to find edibles and make a habitat. Although they will occasionally peck metal house siding, it is not a common occurrence from my experience.

I'd bite the bullet (no pun intended) and go and talk nicely to them. Tell them you just bought a not-inexpensive bird feeder. You noticed they like to shoot BBs and did they by any chance, etc., etc... Of course, if they deny it, all you can do is make a mental note, and ask them if they DO shoot, to be sure it's in a direction away from your property. Beyond that, unless they confess, I don't see that you've got much more recourse. But you'd better remember, because it sounds like they are the guilty parties (do they have kids?).

EDIT: I take back what I said about it sounding like your neighbors. With your added info, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts they're the culprits. In which case, you might consider detonating a small thermonuclear device under their house to get their attention!! ))

A less terroristic tactic could be to first confront them as I noted above, and if you don't like anything about the contact (attitude, etc.) call their landlord and if necessary, call the cops. Sounds like immature punks - as you already alluded to. Good luck.
