I'm getting a Senegal Parrot...?
I'm getting a Senegal, hes tame, handfed, and £395. I went to see him today. I've never had a large parrot before, but i have 4 Lovebirds. I have his cage and everything for him. But i wanna know a few things.
Are nutriberries ok to feed him?
How can i get him to speak?
He mouths a lot, like a puppy, how can i stop this?
Do they like toys as much as Lovebirds?
Are they loud, this isn't a problem for me, just wondering?
And any other good info you can give me!
Thanks Jazz
Dbutt44, lol really! I've just been to 2 pet shops that sell handfed Senegals in the same area, literally a few steps away from each other. They are amazing little birds. I live in South East England and i've seen quite a few round here. Depends where you live.
Nutriberries are okay as treats, but they or any other seed should not make up more than 10% of your parrot's diet. A healthy diet for a Senegal are pellets, bird friendly fresh foods, and a small amount of seed.
My Senegal has just now started trying to talk, and he tries to say the things that he hears me say the most often. Repeating words in a happy tone to a parrot is a good way to get them to learn.
Mouthing... I'm assuming you mean that he nibbles on your fingers a lot. Parrots will do this to various surfaces usually to play, show affection, or even make sure they're sturdy enough to climb onto. Baby parrots do this a lot more often because they're babies, and everything goes to the mouth! This is behavior that he will grow out of naturally as he gets older. Don't worry about it.
All parrots love toys!
Senegals are capable of being very loud, but they are not consistently loud. Usually, they just give off soft beeps and squeaks, and only occasionally will scream. Mine screams sometimes, but it's very rare for him to do so. He screams very distinctly depending on what he's feeling- there is a clear difference between his "I'm scared!" scream and his "I'm happy!" scream. Neither of those occur very often.
By the way, a Senegal is by no means a "large parrot." ^_^ They're one of the little-medium guys. Senegals are known for being very sweet, mellow, and easy to train. They're fun loving, and they like to cuddle. Be sure you can provide him with a very large cage, plenty of toys, and at LEAST four hours a day outside the cage to socialize with you.
You may also want to take home a small amount of handfeeding formula. The move home is very stressful to a parrot, and they will sometimes "revert back" in behavior on the first few nights where they will beg for formula and not eat anything else. When this has happened with my birds and birds I've taken care of in the past, I've mixed some thick formula and mixed some of their food into it and left it in their dish. It seems to do the trick. Make sure to NEVER leave formula out for more than an hour.
Best of luck to you!
